Our teachers are fun, energetic, enthusiastic, personable, and patient.

After graduating from the University of North Carolina with a double major in French and Political Science, she started working for the International Visitor’s Council in Raleigh, NC. At IVC, Melissa collaborated with the U.S. State Department to plan the itineraries of visiting world leaders, specialists, and international scholars. Through IVC, she had the opportunity to meet people from around the world, but found that she was most interested in working with and translating materials for French-speaking visitors. As a result, Melissa decided to pursue her passion for the French language and returned to UNC to obtain a Master’s in Teaching, specializing in French. Through her Master’s program, Melissa worked with students from Kindergarten through 12th grade and ultimately went on to work as a High School French Teacher at an independent school in Raleigh. While continuing to teach beginning through advanced French to high school students during the day, she also began teaching English as a Second Language to adults during the evening at Wake Technical Community College.

In 2006, she moved to Colorado with her husband where they had their daughter. Melissa’s husband is French; therefore, they have had the special opportunity of watching their daughter grow in a bilingual household.

He believes that the ability to communicate with others in a different language gives a person a
great advantage in understanding other cultures and to have a better sense of the global community we are all a part of.  It allows people to travel and interact with locals on a level that would otherwise be impossible.  He is passionate about helping others achieve their goals and learn to speak, read, and write a foreign language because it has so many undeniable advantages.

I began my formal studies of Language Arts in Brazil. I then moved to Mexico City where Spanish became my second language. My next great move was to the United States where I completed my bachelor degree in Spanish and Education. Once graduated, my love for teaching began to flourish. I started my journey as a language educator. I became a Bilingual and English as Second language teacher to adults and children. I experience so much joy and gratitude through teaching. To be of service to another through their growth and exploration of language is immensely rewarding. In addition to teaching I love to be in nature, learn new aspects of language and culture, do yoga, travel, play tennis, and dance to samba!

Julie Ann
Marketing and Operations Director

At New York University, Julie Ann majored in Hellenic Studies and studied modern Greek, Italian, and French. Upon graduation, she managed the before- and after-school programs at a public preschool before moving into higher education administration. After working for eight years at Harvard University and then providing office assistance to a Greek cultural center, she was eager to seek out new challenges and spent a year teaching English as a Foreign Language to elementary and middle school students on a remote atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Julie Ann believes that linguistic studies foster the appreciation of cultural diversity and that learning a secondor third or fourth!language provides us with a global perspective, offers a competitive edge in many careers, and engenders more rewarding international travel.

At JLC, Julie Ann hopes to regain proficiency in French and Italian and is eager to finally study conversational Spanish in this warm and fun environment. Back "on the grid" and new to Colorado, she is excited to be a part of the Journey team to become a resource for JLC students of all ages.
